Fredericton’s UFO Research Legacy
Fredericton holds a unique place in UFO research history as the home of Stanton Friedman, a nuclear physicist and one of the world’s most well-known ufologists.
Friedman spent decades researching UFO cases, government documents, and the Roswell incident. His work helped bring serious attention to unidentified aerial phenomena through archival research, public education, and scientific inquiry.
Several speakers at this conference are connected to the research community that developed around Friedman’s work in Fredericton.
The Fredericton UFO & Metaphysical Conference continues this tradition of open-minded investigation and thoughtful discussion.

Chris Styles
UFO Researcher
Biography
Chris Styles is an active UFO researcher who investigates classic and select current UFO incidents that have occurred in Atlantic Canada. He holds to a “blended” view of the UFO phenomenon, allowing room for both the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) and a significant psychological component. He is best known for his work on the 1967 Shag Harbour Incident and has presented at several MUFON symposia in both Canada and the United States.
Chris has served as a paid technical advisor for Canadian UFO feature documentaries, including Ocean Entertainment’s The Shag Harbour Incident and Northern Lights. He has appeared in several U.S. UFO television specials, including Canada’s Roswell and UFOs II: Have We Been Visited? In 2019, Styles appeared in an episode of Ocean Mysteries with Céline and Fabien Cousteau. He is the co-author of two books on the Shag Harbour Incident: Dark Object (Dell Bantam), with Don Ledger, and Impact to Contact (Arcadia House), with Graham Simms. His most recent book, Sweep Clear 5: NATO’s UFO Encounter, was published in 2023. In 2023, MUFON Canada presented Chris with an honorary membership in recognition of his lifetime achievement in ufology.
Presentation: Shag Harbour & Shelburne in Perspective
This presentation highlights how the 1967 Shag Harbour UFO crash and the 1960 Shelburne USO case represent two distinctly different scenarios — a key distinction that will be emphasized throughout the lecture.
Shag Harbour was a Canadian case largely open to public scrutiny from its beginning. The RCAF’s “Air Desk” treated the case seriously and conducted an in-depth investigation. The incident influenced Canadian government policy on UFO investigations, contributing to the transfer of responsibility to the National Research Council for what was deemed serious scientific study. Archived documents at Library and Archives Canada reference both the Shag Harbour crash and the Falcon Lake landing case in that policy shift.
Despite this history, the Shag Harbour Incident faded from public awareness until Styles began his reinvestigation in 1992. It remains the world’s only UFO crash scenario supported by government documents that are publicly available and without controversy regarding authenticity.
In contrast, the 1960 Shelburne USO case remained a “black box” event with no public awareness until leaks surfaced during the Shag Harbour reinvestigation. After 29 years of research, Styles uncovered the timeline, ship’s roster, and mission details connected to the incident, culminating in his 2023 publication Sweep Clear 5: NATO’s UFO Encounter. The lecture concludes with thoughtful speculation on why these historic cases — and several other notable incidents — may have occurred in Southwest Nova Scotia, including consideration of the region as a potential “thin place” or liminal space.
Major (Ret.) Harold Skaarup
Author • Historian • Former Canadian Army Intelligence Officer

Presentation : UFOs: Where do they come from, why are they here, how do they operate?
Fredericton native Stanton Friedman was a noted nuclear physicist and well-known ufologist. He was a leading authority on unidentified flying objects, alien abductions, and the Roswell incident — considered by many to be the definitive UFO event.
Stanton based his belief in extraterrestrials on research into government documents related to UFO events. He conducted detailed research and on-site investigations, visiting archives and meeting with contactees. Known for his intelligence and sense of humour, Stanton was interviewed for numerous documentaries and gave presentations at colleges and professional groups around the world. Harold’s presentation will explore questions surrounding UFO origin, purpose, and operation, drawing from historical documentation, archival material, and visual representations associated with the Roswell case and related incidents.

Presentation: When the Dead Won’t Rest: Real Canadian Haunting Cases
What happens when reports of ghosts move beyond folklore and into documented investigation?
In When the Dead Won’t Rest: Real Canadian Haunting Cases, Dr. Elliott Van Dusen presents documented investigations conducted by Paranormal Phenomena Research & Investigation (PPRI). Drawing from real client case files, he explores reported apparitions, unexplained physical disturbances, electronic anomalies, and psychologically complex haunting experiences.
As a retired RCMP Corporal specializing in major crimes and homicide, Dr. Van Dusen approaches haunting cases using structured investigative methodology. Each case is treated as a client-centered assessment requiring documentation, interviews, environmental review, and psychological consideration.
Topics Explored
- Apparitional sightings and crisis encounters
- Poltergeist-type disturbances and recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis (RSPK)
- Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and anomalous audio captures
- Environmental and infrasound influences
- Trauma, stress, and psychological factors in haunting reports
- Cases that resolved naturally — and cases that did not
Drawing directly from PPRI case files, Dr. Van Dusen demonstrates how investigators distinguish between misidentification, environmental causes, psychological stress responses, and potentially anomalous phenomena.
Rather than sensationalism, this presentation focuses on responsible investigation and critical thinking. Some cases reveal clear natural explanations. Others resist conventional interpretation and remain open questions. Through real Canadian cases, Dr. Van Dusen invites attendees to explore one of humanity’s oldest questions: What, if anything, survives death?
